Frequently Asked Questions
A compilation of readers' most frequently asked questions
About the Books
- Are any of your books autobiographical?
- Yes, I’m a nineteenth-century redheaded virgin who loves to sail. Kidding. But seriously, the books aren't, but the details in the scenes may be. Except the love scenes. And we’re not going there.
- Why did you start writing Scottish heroes?
- For a couple of reasons. One, if you've read my
books, you know I love dark, fierce, and intense heroes, and my idea
of a Highlander dovetailed with all those traits. And secondly, I
prefer to have my heroes and heroines from different countries. For instance, the
three Scottish MacCarrick Brothers' heroines are from Andorra,
Britain, and France.
I think there's so much conflict to be mined when the characters are from separate cultures. The tearing down of preconceptions, the language differences, the habits that are odd yet charming to the other all make falling in love more fun in my mind. (O.K. I'm biased--my husband is a Swede. Luckily, he's forgiven me for the never-ending Volvo jokes and Swedish Chef Muppet imitations.) - When is Ian's book coming out?
- Ian's story is on hold as of now, but hopefully he will get his own one day.
- Why did you choose to set your IAD series in New Orleans?
- Because I'd never heard of a paranormal series set in NOLA. Joking. Actually, I have a lot of ties to the Crescent City. I still have family there, and I grew up less than two hours away, so I spent a good deal of my childhood there. Some of my earliest memories are of Saints games and music and singing in the streets (not my singing—I’m not cruel).
I also chose New Orleans because an Immortal could blend in there. It occurred to me that Lore creatures could go about undetected on Bourbon Street as long as s/he were bipedal (and I've actually rethought that particular), because people go in costume all the time. So, as long as folks masquerade as otherworldly beings, then immortals can masquerade as humans masquerading.
Plus, if anyone saw something that appeared strange to them (like a Valkyrie swiftly ascending to a roof), they'd likely blame the booze. My friends and I have seen things there that absolutely couldn't be right, but we simply chalked up any visual or auditory hallucinations to potent mixed drinks in plastic containers....
Sighting: three-eyed, talking alley cat.
Explanation: Hand Grenade.

About the Writing
- Why did you start writing? How long have you been writing?
- Check out this article from RT to find out why I HATED writing.
- What would you like to see changed in the genre of romance?
- R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Romance writing is not getting enough of it. The numbers this genre's putting out demand its critical reevaluation. I take comfort in knowing Shakespeare's writing was considered plebeian by highbrow critics in his day.
- What advice do you have for new writers looking to publish?
- If you're set on publishing, then don't dabble. Decide if you're in or you're out. Then do whatever it takes to achieve your goals. I had a “25” plan. At any given time, I would have my writing out in 25 myriad forms--either contests, critiques, agent queries, publisher queries, etc. I believe you have to jump in with both feet.
- Will you ever write another historical?
- Right now I'm concentrating on my paranormal IAD Series, but never say never!
